I received this via an e-mail today and it is making me crazy. Can someone help? An explanation of your answer would also be appreciated so that I can understand the thought process. Thanks!
There are 7 girls in a bus. Each girl has 7 backpacks. In each backpack, there are 7 big cats. For every big cat, there are 7 little cats.
The bus driver is not in the bus at this time.
How many legs are there?
Answer
7 girls- 2 legs each = 14 legs
7 backpacks * 7 girls = 49 backpacks
49 * 7 big cats= 343 big cats
343 big cats * 4 legs= 1372 big cat legs
343* 7 little cats= 2401 little cats
2401* 4= 9604 little cat legs
14+ 1372+ 9604= 10,990 legs
7 girls- 2 legs each = 14 legs
7 backpacks * 7 girls = 49 backpacks
49 * 7 big cats= 343 big cats
343 big cats * 4 legs= 1372 big cat legs
343* 7 little cats= 2401 little cats
2401* 4= 9604 little cat legs
14+ 1372+ 9604= 10,990 legs

Answer
lol! Close. I think what you were trying to say is.
Once, on my way to St Ives, I met a man with seven wives. Every wife had seven sacks; every sack had seven cats. Every cat had seven kits. Kits, cats, sacks, and wives- how many were on their way to St Ives?
The correct answer is zero. You are going St Ives, not them. Although, based on the punctuation involved in telling this nursery rhyme, there is also an argument that there is a silent universal "how many (people/objects/anythings) were on their way." In that case since you are part of the universal populace, the answer would be one.
Nice try though.
