My backpacking budget is 7,000 USD. Would it be worth doing Europe or Australia?

This 7,000 is including airfare. I want to be on the road for three months, but it seems pretty unrealistic with the costs of Europe? If I did the majority of time in Eastern Europe would it be possible? I know Australia has the Working Holiday Visa but Europe seems like a bit more fun.

Answer
Nick,

I come from the central Europe (I've visited Spain, France, Italy, Slovakia, UK) and I've been to Australia (the whole east coast) for 2 months (two years ago), so I know both.

Both has its great and not-that-great features.
Your budget is pretty amazing and I'm sure it would be totally fine in Europe and Aussie as well (including plane tickets)

Every major city in Europe, sight-seeings, hotels and pubs are very close to each other (comparing to Aussie, where you'd most probably have to go by plane if you wanted to see the best of it).
You could fly to Spain and work your way up (France, Italy, UK, eventually north).
When you're in Europe - Spain is absolutely amazing, beautiful nature, outgoing people, great parties. France is a must when you're here. Just remember that we, Europeans, tend to be a little hostile towards strangers. In big cities you'll always meet someone who can speak English, but when backpacking try to at least say a few words in their language (they will appreciate you try).

Not everything in Europe is expensive. Try couchsurfing (you can crash at people's couch) from time to time. Bed and breakfasts are pretty good. The food is always cheaper in Tesco and bigger malls. Try to look for smaller pubs and restaurants - there are plenty of amazing and culinary-marveling places all across Europe.

I think your budget would work even if you wanted to spend all the time in west and south Europe. On the other hand, if you want to travel and see east - no problem. It's not what you might expect but it is beautiful as well. Honestly, I've never been there (Ukraine, Latvia, Romania) because I always like to travel south (sea and ocean are my very best friends) but my ex boss (a girl) is Romanian and I know they are wonderful and kind people (of course, there are jerks and idiots all over the world :D).
Plus you would see and realize (I'm sure) that Eastern Europe is not that pitiful as America sometimes wants us to believe.

Now back to Aussie - the biggest plus is their human nature and also 'nature' nature.
It is beautiful and people are absolutely amazing, kind, open hearted and very welcoming.
I flew from Vienna to Taipei to Sydney to Brisbane, then to Gold Coast, Townsville and Cairns.
(yes, it was tiring :D but definitely worth it). I stayed at my friend's house so I'm not really sure on what the hotels would cost.

Nevertheless, it was the best experience in my travelling life so far.
(one quick reminder - never travel alone, you have no one to share your happiness with and it sucks).
Also, Aussie food is amazing (but then again nothing new for you as an American I guess - sushi, chinese was really new for me).
The parties right next to the beach were unbelievable.
One great plus for you - native English speakers.

I've been there for nearly two months, I've been to rain forests and national parks and I've never met or seen these 'hords of deadly poisonus snakes and spiders' everyone is talking about :D.
Just keep on spraying because of the moscitos and sun-blocking because of, well, the ozone hole right above Aussie.

Both is absolutely gorgeous. It's really up to you and your backpacking pals.
I would personally go with Europe because there is simply more variety on what you can see, eat and who you can meet. Even though, I'm planning on going back to Aussie asap because it is something completely different.
First, I gotta see America (north especially, my heart really longs for San Francisco :D).

Good luck, Nick and let me know if you need a few tips on where to go in Europe or something like that. Also, I live in the Czech Republic, you can crash at my place anytime.

Cheers
