I am going to Paris this August and I am keen not to look like a silly american.
I would also like to know some other tips on french culture and ways to fit in.

Two words: black and scarves!
The key with looking Parisian is mastering the art of looking effortlessly chic. French women/girls always look put-together and well, good; but without looking like they're trying too hard.
Get a nice pair of dark wash jeans. Pair it with some (HEELED) knee-length black or brown boots. Finish off with a nice black blouse with a loose, long cardigan. Finally, accessorize with a chic scarf (dark colours are better) and some subtle jewelry. Chunky/beaded charm bracelets are really cute. Opt for a large, slouchy, hobo bag. Don't forget your peacoat! If it's sunny, slap on a pair of Ray Ban Wayfarers, every French girl (and guys'!) fashion staple. Think: feminine, classy, and mysterious.

Don't overstyle your hair. You'll notice that French girls do practically nothing to their hair. They like it long, flowing, loose, and wavy. Coming from North America, I'm used to seeing girls with dyed, straightened, layered, hairsprayed, blowdried, etc hair. In France, women wash their hair (MAYBE blow dry, MAAAYYBE) and go. It's so simple!
Keep your maquillage (makeup) understated as well :)
Look at the photos for inspiration. Graphic tees and hoodies are a NO-NO. You'll look American. However, some people find this cool. Test the waters by wearing a Hollister or Abercombie hoodie one day. Some girls at the French high school I went to in Southern France tried to look American by doing this; they wanted to look cool :P The grass is always greener, hey? NO FLIP-FLOPS or YOGA PANTS. They scream tourist.

_ 5 camis (one white, grey, black, brown, and a color of your choice)
_ 5 - 8 graphic tees (not all the same color)
_ 4 v-neck shirts (2 plain colors and two patterned)
_ 3 hoodies (either pull over or zip up which ever you prefer)
_ 2 sweaters (try to get at least one of them a neutral like black, brown, or grey)
_ 6 pairs of jeans (3 light wash and 3 dark wash in whatever style you prefer - skinny, boot cut, flare, etc.)
_ 2 pair sweat pants or fleece pants
_ 3 pairs of capris (maybe a khaki and two denim pairs)
_ 5 pairs of shorts ( three denim, a khaki, and another color)
_ 3 short skirts (2 denim and a black, khaki, brown, or white)
_ 1 pair of leggings (unless you think they are soo last season - try capri length in grey or black)
_ 4 dresses (one formal, two casual, and one sun dress)
_ 2 pair of flip flops or sandals (in neutral colors)
