Backpacks......................................?

bee happy

ok so i know rolling backpacks are dorky. and annoying and whatever else you may care to add...however, i have bad back problems (cracking in lower back and neck, and pain) that keep getting worse. i use a normal backpack now and on average carry a binder, notebook, and folder to school but much more at school. my backpack probably weighs around 15-20 pounds. I'm 13 in middle school and don't particularly want a rolly backpack if ya know what i mean. what should i do?

Answer
From my experience backpacking with loads around fifty pounds, I suggest a couple of preventative measures that you can take:

1] Do not carry a backpack over one shoulder. This creates an imbalanced load, distorting the spinal orientation and muscular response in your body.

2] Purchase a good-quality outdoor recreation backpack that is fit by an outfitter at a specialized outdoor gear shop. A proper backpack loads weight on your hips, not your shoulders and back. The difference between load-bearing on your hips rather than the upper torso is HUGE. An Osprey brand backpack may cost $160 for an adult. You may be able to find a good backpack for less. REI Acumen Mens Laptop Pack, $80, has a minimal waistband. However, other models are designed for more aggressive use with a wider, padded waistband more appropriate for your needs:
Osprey Talon 22 Pack, $100; REI Lookout 40 Pack, $90; Osprey Talon 33 Pack, $130; Gregory Miwok 18 Pack, $75. REI Passage 40 Kid Pack, $100, is probably right for your body size.
Since a single visit to a chiropractor or physical therapist will cost $100 or more, you are better off investing in a good-quality backpack fitted to your size with a waist belt.

3] Visit a chiropractor or physical therapist if your back pains persist.

Where did this originate? Where parents carry the kids backpack?

TS

I was with my sister picking her kids up from school (elementary) and all the OTHER parents were carrying their kids backpack. I mean A LOT of them. When did kids stop carrying their own backpacks? Is this something new? Do you think its right?

Answer
Because parents want to further pussify their kids.
The schools (in their infinite wisdom) are admittedly loading down even the tiniest of kids with heavy books, but that's still no reason for parents to carry their backpacks 50 feet to their MomMobile. Kids don't even walk any more! They get driven even if home's less than a few blocks, and now they can't even carry their own books to the minivan.
Pathetic. Not the kids, mind, they have no choice. What's pathetic is the parents who create this kind of dependence.

Parents these days won't let kids do anything for themselves because the more a kid does for themselves, the more independent they become, and the more independent they are, the less *control* a parent has on them, and total control over everything (until at least age 18, but usually it's closer to 30 now) is the current aim. It's just a sign of the times that parents can't even allow their kids the independence to carry their own bag.

I don't see it as spoiling at all. I don't think most of the kids want this kind of babying; it's the parents forcing it on them. I know that my kids at least would object if I took something as trivial as being responsible for their own things out of their hands.
