Most girls carry brand name totes. Some I've seen in school are:
1. Vera Bradley
2. Betsey Johnson
3. Coach
4. Le Sport Sac*
5. American Eagle/ Aero/ Abercrombie/ Hollister totes
6. Marc Jacobs
7. Dooney and Bourke*
8. L.L Bean*
9. Juicy Couture
Some girls carry backpacks too but not as much as totes. Brands I've seen are:
1. Jansport * (they're awesome!!!)
2. The North Face*
I carry a Jansport backpack. I've actually carried a tote for a year (Vera Bradley) but I switched back to backpacks. They are much more comfortable. You also don't have to worry about them getting dirty or someone reaching inside and stealing something. Books are less likely to fall out. They are also healthier. Carrying a tote on one shoulder will alter the shape of your spine. Jansport backpacks are very high quality and available in many cute colors and patterns! The North Face also makes durable and high quality backpacks too!
Overall, it's your own preference. Are you going to be carrying tons of textbooks or just light folders? Are you sensitive to back pain? Do you prefer lots of pockets or just several? Can you afford a designer bag?
