Schools leting kids carry Backpacks?

Hey I need some help with this one. What percentage of schools nation wide let middle and high school students carry their back packs around during the day. My school doesn't and theirs a project we are doing to let us carry our backpacks around. PLEASE HELP!!!!!

what do you mean carry around their backpacks? like do you have to store stuff in your lockers or what?
i know that pretty much every school i've heard of can carry them.

If so, what do they _put_ in them? My 4 year old is starting preschool on Monday and they have lockers for jackets and backpacks, but I just can't imagine what he'd actually carry in it. An extra set of clothes stays at school, they aren't allowed to bring toys or anything, and yes, they do craft activities and whatnot, but isn't it just easier to carry those in hand since we're not necessarily walking any further than to the parking lot?

What am I missing, or are backpacks just part of the excitement of preschool even if they aren't practical?

The backpack is a vessel for the teacher and you to communicate. Our students have folders that they carry home every night. If the teacher needs to send home a note, it will be in the folder. She will also place other bits of info in there for the parents and in turn, if the parent needs to write the teacher a note about food allergies or medication, this folder/backpack communication makes it easier. Plus, he'll need the backpack to bring home all the cool stuff that he's been doing in preschool.
