Central Union Mission in DC. They help homeless families. They also give out backpacks before school starts. They have a holiday program where you can adopt a kid. My office adopts at least 6 kids per year and it's a great success!!!!

How can I help the lives of kids?

Hi! I am really interested in helping the lives of children. I really want to do the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program, like a mentor; but I am not old enough. What are some organizations or programs where I could donate time to children? I don't want to donate money because half the time you don't know where the money goes. Any answers would be appreciated. Thanks!

Answer
Start by talking to your school counselor about things that are needed by homeless and at risk students in your own school - school supplies, shoes, food on weekends like snack in a backpack http://feedfannin.com/ the counselor or district homeless students liaison will not give you student names of course to respect their privacy but can help you make a list of needs and maybe plan a way to either collect things like a big box in the school office and posters and announcements about it or even plan a fundraiser like a car wash or a concert or talent show.

Depending on your age you may be able to be a counselor in training at a camp this summer which will help you learn about relating to children from different backgrounds.

You can offer to tutor younger kids for free in subjects you do well.

You may be able to volunteer at the park and recreation department as a playground helper or craft helper or whatever.

if your school has an after school program you can see if you can volunteer to help with that

If it is OK with your parents you can collect books, gently used and new toys and games etc for children in a shelter or offer to provide birthday cake and a gift for a a shelter child having a birthday each month and maybe get others to donate gifts for other birthday kids in shelters.

These are all things that will be good experience to show when you are old enough to help out with Big Brothers and Big Sisters,
