going back to school for your young child!?

Pattilynn

Just looking to see what other parents are doing with there children for the school year. I find september alot like December ,only a little less expensive. when parents say " i only need backpacks and inside outside shoes.. " i laugh... As much as parents HOPE school isnt going to break the bank , it always puts a nice dent into it.

Most kids ( where i live anyways. ) get

2 new pairs of shoes (can be expensive if your a footlocker fan )
suppiles ( have anyone seen the gr.1 list this year? WOOZERS! )
haircuts
new socks , undergarmets , jackets,sweaters , hairbows, etc...

i am talking about pre, kindergarden , grade 1 children... i can imagine it gets worst as they age... at least that seems where its taking me...

wondering whats on or checklist for your young child for the upcoming week?

Answer
Some of the things needed can be bought a little at a time long before school starts.
For instance, next Spring look for sweaters and coats on sale. Socks and underwear can be bought ahead of time.
Backpacks, lunch bags, school mats, and other school items often go on sale at the end of the school year.
Also, if you are crafty you can fashion hair bows and other accessories yourself during the summer months when most of us have to spend time inside out of the heat anyway. Keep a 'scrap' box in the closet where you toss items that are no longer useful but have beads, fake gems, fancy buttons, etc on them. An old scarf can become a fancy belt when threaded through loops on jeans. A stained shirt can be worn under a spaghetti strap top to give dimension to an outfit. Beads from a broken necklace can be sewn onto the neck of a plain shirt to 'fancy' it up.
Use your imagination. It's fun.

How do you explain to young children that Christopher Columbus was an evil and racist man?

Katana

My nephew just received a class assignment presentation where the students will be speaking about Christopher Columbus,on his assignment sheet it had a picture of the Columbus holding the flag of Spain and claiming the Americas for Spain and the words "great hero who discovered America".I for on do NOT want my Native American Indian(Hopi) nephew being brainwashed to believe that when the Whites invaded the Americas that all was "good" when that's far from being true.I want to teach my 5 year old nephew the truth without Sugar coating any facts and at the same time not scare him

Answer
there is a book specifically to help teachers and other adults show the truth about columbus to children of different age groups. its called Rethinking Columbus.

http://www.rethinkingschools.org/ProdDetails.asp?ID=094296120X

in it there are activities to help them understand exactly what he did. one of my favorites is a teacher comes in the room and picks up a backpack of one of the children (wh is in on the act) and claims they discovered it and then goes through its contents one by one saying its now theirs. as you can imagine children get it very quickly how wrong it is. i recommend it highly.
