This questions often surprises me. In the 10+ years I've been in this field... our preschools never asked for the families to provide certain supplies for each child. That came in Kindergarten/First Grade. The 2 years my son has been in preschool...we weren't given a list of things that were needed. Most preschool classrooms are considered "communities" where items are shared. If anything we asked parents to donate a box of kleenex and if there was nap time...to supply a blanket. Oh yes, a "full-size" backpack ... (the children's full size...not an adult full size :-) We don't want them having difficulty with the bag but we need enough space to put paper and folders in!) You'll need to discuss this with the PreK program.
A side note...at home it's nice to have a little area set up for your child to have some free time to explore with crayons, glue, scissors, a name tag, paper, etc.

Like, a regular backpack I've been using since Kindergarten, or can you use a tote-bag or shoulder bag that's big enough to carry your books?

i use different types...I mostly use a juicy c messenger bag or a couple different medium/large purses. tote bags I find, didn't even help at all when it came to carrying everything around especially since there's no pockets or anything and it'll get cluttered. Oh and your shoulder will hurt of course.
