Hey yeah! Are you alright with buying online? Assuming that you are, try checking out Ebay. They have brilliant backpacks on there both new and second hand (they have everything on there so if you need any other back to school equipment you might benefit from checking there for them too.)

If you sign up with paypal after signing up with ebay, then when you pay for your item it'll all be secure so that if there are any problems you can get a refund. But they have a thing on there where people leave feedback for each other so that you can see how trustworthy people are, how fast items arrive, whether the packaging was good etc, how nice the people were.

Anyway here you go: http://ebay.co.uk (for the UK) or http://ebay.com (for the US.) They have other sites as well for different countries, so it's all very flexible.

When you hunt for something very popular that can vary in colour, size, make etc they often have dropdown menus on the left on the sidebar so that you can be specific. I don't know if this comment is too late for you, but I guess you could always check it out for next time or something.

I did a quick search for kids backpacks, so there's the UK and the US links below. Oh and if you're in the UK you might want to check out http://www.yourdesign.co.uk/

You can make loads of cool custom things including bags with any picture you like on it. Cartoon or film characters, pictures found on the net, personal photos etc. And they do other stuff too which the kids might like but I'll keep on topic here.

Have fun.

Answer
I'd go for eBay - that'd be the cheapest route, probably. Unless you need them right away and then head straight to Babies R Us, they should have them there, as well as high end baby stores (USA Baby, Babyland).
One option is the GoGo Kidz Travelmate by GoGo Babyz. Do a search online to find the cheapest, I've seen them on eBay, and you might save some money buying one used. The GoGo Kidz one is probably the best, b/c the child can actually sit in it while you're wheeling it, using a handle, pretty much turning it into a stroller. A very convenient feature for walking through the airport. Strap them in the car seat like normal and then wheel them.

I also found a car seat travel bag at Walmart that's under $40 that has wheels, but the child can't sit in it while using the wheels, since it's a bag and it covers the seat up. There's another one at Walmart that's under $30, has wheels, and then can also be used to cover the seat up when its in the car in the sun so it doesn't get too hot for the child to sit in. They also have one that has straps so you can carry the car seat like a backpack, wouldn't be incredibly comfortable with a Britax or similar seat, since they're heavier.
There was a slew of listings for the Gogo Kidz one on eBay, just do a search in Baby--Car Seats --Accessories for Gogo Kidz and they'll come up. Regular price is $70-something.
