What are classes like in graduate school?

Jane

I'll be finished with my B.A. in December of this year and in the Spring I'm moving immediately into the Master's program (English) What I want to know is...what are the classes like? Please confirm or unconfirm what I've heard: I've heard that there aren't midterms and finals. There certainly aren't multiple choice tests (or even essay tests). Mostly just papers (but long ones). You may have 'homework' due, but it's more sophisticated, like homework that starts off discussions, etc. Please respond even if you didn't do graduate work in English; I image graduate classes are similar in some respects, regardless of major.

In the early part of a graduate program it can be a mixed bag, and you may be forced to take a few undergraduate classes to fill in gaps in your background. Graduate courses themselves tend to vary by the level of the program, with the early courses not too different from undergraduate courses but with fewer students and a great deal more reading and writing with some examinations (and I would hope, especially in English, no multiple choice examinations). Examinations are possible, though usually only a final and no midterm (varies by instructor, department and program, of course). As you progress the courses become more specialized, usually smaller and often require a much reading and other work in preparation for discussion of a specific topic in great detail. Toward the end or a program many classes will be seminars where most of the work is done by the students who lead discussions of their thesis proposals and thesis research.

i'm a majo

thanks again for everything(:

Answer
lol. sorry, i just graduated middle school and is going to highschool, so this brings back memories.

If you aren't set for school, you can always go back to some superstore (Walmart or something) and buy what you need.
From my experiance, different teachers want different things. Some prefered duotangs, some GAVE duotangs and notebooks, some demanded binders, some demanded lined paper...etc, etc.
Took me a good two years (more then half my middleschool life) to figure out the best combination of things for me.

It's not alot of homework. Unless you have some meanypoo teacher, but even then, it's not that bad. The trick is to get it done at school in any free time during class (like when the teacher says that when your done all your work, you can read of draw quietly, you get out your homework from other classes). Because, during class, your in that state of mind where your focused. but when your back home, its like 'blehhhhh'.
- Don't fall behind on sleep. It's very important
- Be as neat as possible. It really helps. Many teachers take marks if your notebooks are neat. Plus, whats the point of notes, if you can't read them
- Invest in some good quality writing utensils. Really helpful in the long run.
- Don't let random people you barely know borrow your good pencils and pens. High chance of them breaking it >_< But, if your like me and can't say no, I keep 2 or 3 extra pencils for them.
- Projects are different now. You can only do them at home, theres no more 'time in class' anymore. Also, learn right now how to cite sources. HUGE HELP. trust me. It doesn't seem like it, but later on, you will see.
- Even if you ever get a teacher like my old one (old, cranky, doesnt like kids, racist, hated...etc), never talk back (i yelled at her once. Believe me, she has the upper hand). If the teacher really is bad (i.e. violent, mean, crude, calls you names [yes, I had one like this too]), rally up the students when you are all out of class (thats what we did. Made a petition and everything).
- Buy a scientific calculator. A really good one (not like....600$, but 20$ is better then awesome). It is rather helpful once you learn how to use it.
- BUY RULERS AND PROTRACTORS. these things disappear like CRAZY.

Middle school is very fun if you want it to be.
My biggest worry when I was in your shoes was the social problems. I've never had trouble making friends, but I'm a bit weird and I thought I wouldnt be able to find any friends.
- Don't try too hard to be popular. Be someone who everyone likes, but one of those queen bee type groups are real and be aware of them. I was once there. It doesn't feel good. Plus, in their superficially happy groups, it's a big mess of hatred, lies and guilt.
- Middle School iss when friendship troubles start. In elementry, it's just WHHEE. LETS GO COLOUR TOGETHER. HAHA. RED CRAYONS!!! But, in middle school, you find that your friends are more important and you start to share personal things with your friends. But this also leads to problems. Be careful with who you trust. But trust your friends at the same time.
- Do. Not. Go. For. Boys. Sure, it's cute if you're 'dating' a guy who admited he likes you, but note that this is just a little thing. It may seem like forever, but it won't be (Believe me, I've had lots of experiance with this). It's when boys may seem great, and that you'll want to lose your first kiss (real kiss). I suggest you wait till highschool. This one boy who i know said that he had had sex before. At the age of 12. Even if not true, it's sad to know that someone his age would even consider lying about this.
- Please know and understand that the '8s' are older then you. They have more experiance in this school then you do, even if by only 2 years. They do feel more superior and have a slight right to be.
DO NOT be annoying to them. I speak of this from personal experiance, there are immature kids out there who enjoy annoying the hell outta everyone she/he sees, even kind and nice teachers.
Even if you don't know you are currently annoying them, at least get the message when they say fuck off.
- Don't say hi to random people in the hall, then giggle about it with your friend behind you. It's not cool. Gives you a bad reputation as the 'annoying 6er kid'.
- I know it doesn't seem fair, but in the hallways, I have noticed this patter. When a large group of eighters move through the hallway, everybody seperates to accomodte them. I know it doesn't seem fair, but most people do this subconsiously. Note this, and follow it.

Remember, when you go to highschool, alot of these people will remember you. The nickname of 'that annoying little girl who never shut the fuck up' will never, ever be forgotten. Those sohpomores and juniors WILL not like you. And that is not a good thing.

Long post yah.

Middleschool is like a game of monoply. It's very fun to play. Requires strategy, cunning and a good sense of math (boy, you will need this) Depen
